Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth
to perform Tuesday, October 23 at Missouri Theatre

The Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth is coming to Columbia to perform at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 23 at the Missouri Theatre.

Tickets are $23 and $28, and are on sale now via Ticketmaster and at the Missouri Theatre box office.

While they’re in town, members of Roomful of Teeth will visit the University of Missouri campus to give a presentation on their music and take part in a reading session of works by student composers David Vega, Niko Schroeder, and Ethan Forte. They also will coach and rehearse with the University Singers, who will join them onstage during their Missouri Theatre concert for a performance of “Quizassa” by composer Merrill Garbus.

Founded in 2009, Roomful of Teeth (pictured) is an eight-voice ensemble that studies and incorporates singing techniques from around the world to create what they call “a new repertoire without borders.”

Their eponymous debut album was nominated in three categories in the 2014 Grammy Awards, and subsequently won the award for “Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance.” The album contains their recording of “Partita for 8 Voices,” a composition by group member Caroline Shaw that won the Pulitzer Prize for music in 2013. Their most recent album “Render” was released in April 2015.

Roomful of Teeth has performed in concert halls and at festivals across the United States, and has commissioned new works from composers including Elena Ruehr, Christine Southworth and Evan Ziporyn, Rinde Eckert, Judd Greenstein, Caleb Burhans, Merrill Garbus (of tUnE-yArDs), William Brittelle, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Missy Mazzoli, Sam Amidon, Michael Harrison, Ted Hearne, and Julia Wolfe.

Composer Michael Daugherty’s upcoming residency
at Mizzou inspires three concerts featuring his music

Grammy Award-winning composer Michael Daugherty is coming to Columbia for a residency, and the University of Missouri School of Music and the Mizzou New Music Initiative are welcoming him with three concerts featuring his music in October.

Daugherty, who is a professor of composition at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, will be in Columbia for two days. On the first evening of his residency, the MU Wind Ensemble will perform his works “On the Air” and “Niagara Falls” as part of a concert at 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 8 at the Missouri Theatre. Admission to the performance is $5 for the general public, free for MU students, faculty and staff with IDs.

The next evening, seven more of Daugherty’s compositions will be featured a concert devoted entirely to his music, with performances by Mizzou faculty ensembles ZouM and DRAX; the Missouri Saxophone Quartet; the Mizzou New Music Ensemble; and faculty soloists Eli Lara, Leigh Muñoz and Julie Rosenfeld. That concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 9 at Whitmore Recital Hall, and is free and open to the public.

While he’s on campus, Daugherty (pictured) also will make a presentation on his music, give private lessons to composition students, and work with the Mizzou New Music Ensemble, who will complete the concert trilogy when they play two of his works in their first performance of the semester on Monday, October 15, also at Whitmore Recital Hall.

Daugherty is a composer, pianist, and teacher who’s originally from Cedar Rapids, IA. He is one of the most widely performed American concert music composers of his generation, influenced by Romanticism, Postmodernism, and popular culture, and known for referencing in his music iconic figures ranging from Elvis Presley and Superman to Frida Kahlo and Jackie Onassis.

His teachers included notable 20th century composers such as Jacob Druckman, Earle Brown, Bernard Rands and Roger Reynolds from 1980-82 at Yale; Pierre Boulez in 1979 and 1980 at IRCAM in Paris; and György Ligeti from 1982 to 1984 in Hamburg. Daugherty was also an assistant to famed jazz arranger Gil Evans from 1980 to 1982 in New York.

Daugherty’s orchestral music has received six Grammy awards, including “Best Contemporary Classical Composition” in 2011 and 2017, and has been commissioned and premiered by major orchestras such as the Albany Symphony, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony (U.K), Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Nashville Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra, Pacific Symphony, Philharmonia Orchestra (London), Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, RAI Symphony Orchestra (Milan), and San Francisco Symphony.

Alarm Will Sound to play free concert on
Wednesday, December 6 at Missouri Theatre

Alarm Will Sound is returning to Columbia to perform at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 6 at the Missouri Theatre, 203 S. 9th St. Admission to the concert is free and open to the public.

As the resident ensemble for the annual Mizzou International Composers Festival (MICF), Alarm Will Sound (pictured) has been playing in mid-Missouri since 2010, and five of the six composers whose works they’ll perform in December at the Missouri Theatre have a connection to the MICF.

Two of the works were created specifically for the festival by past resident composers. “Paper Pianos I. You are not a kid,” was written by Mary Kouyoumdjian and premiered at the 2016 MICF, and “Urban Sprawl” was written by Clint Needham and was first performed the 2011 festival.

Needham currently is composer-in-residence and assistant professor at the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music in Ohio; Kouyoumdjian is a freelance composer based in New York City.

Alarm Will Sound also will perform new works by two of its own members. “Escape Wisconsin” is by AWS violinist and guitarist Caleb Burhans, and premiered at the 2017 MICF, while “Unremixed” was composed by Stefan Freund, who is the cellist for AWS, professor of composition at Mizzou, and artistic director of the MICF and the Mizzou New Music Initiative.

Completing the program will be two pieces by well-known contemporary composers, “Try” by Andrew Norman and “Scratchband” by John Adams.

Norman was a distinguished guest composer at the 2015 MICF, and is the winner of the 2017 Grawemeyer Award for outstanding achievement by a living composer, and an assistant professor of composition at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music; Adams is the Grammy Award and Pulitzer Prize winning composer of “Nixon In China,” “Doctor Atomic,” “Shaker Loops” and more.

Tickets for 2017 Mizzou International Composers Festival go on sale Friday, May 26

Tickets for the 2017 Mizzou International Composers Festival (MICF) will go on sale at 10:00 a.m. CDT on Friday, May 26.

Known as the region’s premier showcase for new works by top young composers, the MICF will take place this year from Monday, July 24 through Saturday, July 29 in Columbia, and will include three public concerts.

Returning for the eighth year as the festival’s resident ensemble, Alarm Will Sound will begin the weekend of shows at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 27 at the Missouri Theatre, 203 S. Ninth St. in downtown Columbia.

They’ll perform music from the 2017 MICF’s distinguished guest composers, Georg Friedrich Haas and Dan Visconti, as well as works by Robert Sirota, Don Freund, and AWS violinist/guitarist Caleb Burhans.

Next, the “Mizzou New Music” concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 28 at the Missouri Theatre will feature performances by the Mizzou New Music Ensemble and guest artists DRAX, with saxophonist Leo Saguiguit and percussionist Megan Arns, and cellist Eli Lara.

The grand finale of the week will showcase the world premieres of eight new works written by the festival’s resident composers and performed by Alarm Will Sound at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 29 at the Missouri Theatre.

Festival VIP packages are $80, and include reserved premium seating at all three concerts; two drink tickets good at the Thursday and Friday performances; and admission to a VIP reception prior to the Saturday evening performance, featuring champagne and hors d’oeuvres with members of Alarm Will Sound and the composers.

Festival passes for all three concerts are $40 for an adult general admission pass, and $20 for a student general admission pass. During the festival, the resident composers will receive composition lessons from distinguished guest composers George Friedrich Haas, a native of Austria and a professor of composition at Columbia University who is considered to be one of the major European composers of his generation; and Dan Visconti, a Chicago-based composer and concert programmer also known as an advocate for the arts as a form of cultural and civic service.

The resident composers also will take part in rehearsals with Alarm Will Sound; give presentations on their music; and receive a premiere performance and professional live recording of their work.

From the Grammy Awards to Mizzou with Third Coast Percussion

When Third Coast Percussion visits the University of Missouri next week, not only will they be coming directly from the Grammy Awards, they’ll actually be bringing a bit of Mizzou along with them.

The Chicago-based group is nominated for a Grammy this year in the category of “Best Chamber Music/ Small Ensemble Performance” for their album Steve Reich, and they’ll also be performing at the Grammy “Premiere Ceremony” hosted by comedian Margaret Cho before the nationally televised portion of the awards gets underway on Sunday, February 12 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

When they get to Columbia the next day, the four members of TCP will be looking at a busy schedule, culminating in a concert on Friday, February 17 at the Missouri Theatre, but also including various other activities throughout the week, most notably a workshop presentation of a new piece they recently commissioned from a Mizzou alumnus.

José Martínez, who earned his master’s degree in composition from Mizzou in 2016, was selected by Third Coast Percussion to participate in their Emerging Composers Partnership for the 2016-17 season.

Now pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Texas, Martínez during his time in Columbia was the percussionist for the Mizzou New Music Ensemble; a resident composer at the 2014 Mizzou International Composers Festival; and the winner of the 2013 Sinquefield Composition Prize, the University’s highest honor for a composition student.

After being chosen by Third Coast Percussion for this year’s Emerging Composers Partnership, he took part in a series of workshops with the group as a prelude to writing a new piece to be premiered in a concert this spring in Chicago.

That commissioned composition, “Two Questions About Time,” will get its first official performance on Sunday, May 28 at the Chicago venue Constellation, but Mizzou students and curious Columbia listeners will be able to hear how it’s shaping up in a public open workshop session with TCP and Martínez from 10:00 a.m to noon on Thursday, February 16 in Room 112 of Loeb Hall.

Third Coast Percussion’s residency also will include a performance for students at Lee Elementary School and a masterclass with the MU Percussion Studio on Tuesday, February 14; a joint public performance of Terry Riley’s “In C” with the Mizzou New Music Ensemble at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 15 at the Student Center; and a reading session of new music by Mizzou student composers Jake Smucker, Trey Makler, and Aaron Mencher at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 16 at Whitmore Recital Hall.

Though TCP won’t be playing Martínez’ new work at their concert on Friday, the program nevertheless will have another connection to the Mizzou New Music Initiative, as it will include music by two former distinguished guest composers at the Mizzou International Composers Festival.

The group will play “Resounding Earth, mvt. 2, Prayer,” written by Augusta Read Thomas, who was a guest at the 2014 MICF; and “Surface Tension,” by Donnacha Dennehy, who took part in the 2012 festival. Steve Reich’s 2009 “Mallet Quartet” and Glenn Kotche’s “Wild Sound, part 4,” written in 2014, will complete the evening.

2017 Mizzou International Composers Festival set for July 24 – 29;
applications for eight resident composers now open

The Mizzou New Music Initiative is now accepting applications for eight resident composers to take part in the 2017 Mizzou International Composers Festival (MICF), which will be held Monday, July 24 through Saturday, July 29 on the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia.

Georg Friedrich Haas and Dan Visconti will serve as the distinguished guest composers for the 2017 MICF, which will include three public concerts of contemporary music as well as workshops, master classes and other events.

As in years past, Saturday night’s grand finale at the Missouri Theatre will feature the world premieres of new works from each of the eight resident composers, with the acclaimed new music group Alarm Will Sound, conducted by artistic director Alan Pierson, serving as resident ensemble.

The resident composers are selected for the MICF each year through an online portfolio application process. During the Festival, they’ll get composition lessons from the distinguished guest composers and Mizzou faculty, and take part in rehearsals with Alarm Will Sound. Each composer also will receive a professional live recording of their work.

Georg Friedrich Haas

A native of Austria, Haas is a professor of composition at Columbia University in New York City, and previously held dual professorships at the Hochschle für Musik in Basel, Switzerland, and the Kunstuniversität in Graz, Austria.

Considered to be one of the major European composers of his generation, Haas has received many national and international awards, including in 2007 the Grand Austrian State Prize for Music, the country’s highest artistic honor.

His compositions include operas, concertos, and a variety of chamber music, including seven string quartets, and his works have been performed by orchestras and chamber ensembles all over the world. One of Haas’ best-known compositions is “In Vain,” written in 2000 for a 24-piece chamber ensemble and praised as “a modern masterwork” by The New Yorker‘s influential music critic Alex Ross.

Dan Visconti

Visconti is a Chicago-based composer who currently serves as director of artistic programming at Fifth House Ensemble, a concert organization that presents innovative collaborative, educational, and interactive events. Known as an advocate for addressing social issues through music, he also is a sought-after speaker and writer on the subject of the arts as a form of cultural and civic service.

Visconti has earned numerous honors and commissions as a composer, and his works have been played by orchestras in the United States, Europe and Australia and by top interpreters of contemporary music including eighth blackbird, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Da Capo Chamber Players, and many others.
