Alarm Will Sound

Tickets are now on sale for the 2014 Mizzou International Composers Festival’s concerts on Thursday, July 24; Friday, July 25; and Saturday, July 26.

Celebrating its fifth anniversary in 2014, the Mizzou International Composers Festival will take place starting Monday, July 21 through Saturday, July 26 in Columbia. Already considered one of the most noteworthy contemporary music events in the Midwest, the MICF attracts attention from composers, musicians, music educators, and media around the world.

Once again, the grand finale of the week will feature the world premieres of eight new works written by the festival’s resident composers and performed by the acclaimed new music ensemble Alarm Will Sound (pictured, top left).  That concert will take place at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 26 at the Missouri Theatre, 203 S. Ninth St.

The festival’s other two public performances will feature Alarm Will Sound at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24 at the Missouri Theatre; and “Mizzou New Music,” featuring works by MICF guest composers Beat Furrer and Nico Muhly, and by MU faculty and student composers, performed by the Mizzou New Music Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 25 at the Missouri Theatre.

Festival passes good for admission to all three concerts are on sale for $80 for the VIP package, which includes reserved premium seating; $40 for an adult general admission pass; and $20 for a student general admission pass.

In addition to these three concerts, the MICF also will feature several free events, including open rehearsals and presentations by the participating composers. A complete schedule of those events will be released at a later date.

The eight resident composers were selected from more than 200 applicants from the USA and overseas to participate in the festival and create a new work for Alarm Will Sound. They are:

During the festival, the resident composers will receive composition lessons from guest composers Beat Furrer (pictured, center left), professor of composition at the Graz University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Vienna; and Nico Muhly (pictured, below left), a Juilliard graduate and protégé of Phillip Glass known for composing an eclectic range of works for classical and pop musicians, ballet, opera, and more.

The resident composers also will take part in rehearsals with Alarm Will Sound; give presentations on their music; and receive a premiere performance and professional live recording of their work.

MICF resident composers in the news

Here’s the latest news and updates from some of the resident composers at past Mizzou International Composers Festivals:

* Jeremy Podgursky, MICF 2010, is one of six winners this year of a Charles Ives scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The $7,500 scholarships are awarded to composition students of great promise, as selected by a committee of academy members including MICF 2010 guest composer Martin Bresnick, Joan Tower, Samuel Adler, Mario Davidovsky, John Harbison, Stephen Hartke, Tania León, and Tobias Picker. The Ives scholarships and the academy’s other awards in music will be presented at a ceremony in May.

* Asha Srinivasan, MICF 2012, (pictured) is having compositions performed at three major events this month.  She was the featured composer and her works “Dviraag” and “Bapu” were played at the Western Illinois University New Music Festival, March 4 in Macomb, IL.  Srinivasan’s “Keerthanata” will be played at the Region V conference of the Society of Composers, Inc., held March 27-29 at Ball State University in Muncie, IN, and  her tuba and fixed media work “Dyadic Affinities” will be played at the national conference of SEAMUS, aka the Society of Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States which takes place the same weekend  at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT.

* A new oboe trio composed by Stephanie Berg, MICF 2012 and a Mizzou almuna who earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at MU, will be performed next year as part of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra‘s chamber music series.

* David Crowell, MICF 2012, was the subject of a recent profile in the Huffington Post. The accompanying audio samples include “Fallout,” which Crowell wrote for Alarm Will Sound and the MICF. His new percussion work “Celestial Sphere” will be performed by Ian David Rosenbaum and a consortium of percussionists on March 23 at the Philips Collection in Washington D.C., while Crowell and his band Empyrean Atlas will play March 24 at Roulette in Brooklyn.

* Speaking of Alarm Will Sound, they’ve been using David Biedenbender‘s “Schism,” composed for the 2011 MICF, as part of their work in St. Louis with students at Webster University’s Community Music School. AWS and the CMS students will perform the piece together on Friday, May 30 at the Sheldon Concert Hall. The video below shows them working side-by-side on “Schism,” while the audio player contains AWS’ recording of it from the MICF.

Alarm Will Sound to perform free concert on Friday, February 7 at Missouri Theatre

Alarm Will Sound, the acclaimed chamber orchestra dedicated to contemporary classical music, is returning to Columbia to perform a concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, February 7 at the Missouri Theatre.

The group (pictured) has served since 2010 as the resident ensemble for the Mizzou International Composers Festival, which takes place each year in July, but this will be their first performance here during the regular academic year. The February 7 concert is presented by the Mizzou New Music Initiative and the University of Missouri School of Music, and is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature seven works written or arranged specifically for Alarm Will Sound, including five that will be part of their next album. According to managing director Gavin Chuck, it’s a program that shows off the group’s established ability to translate music between idioms while also exploring human performance of sounds originally made by technology.

Two of the pieces they’ll play – Matt Marks’ arrangement of the Beatles’ “Revolution 9,” heard previously as part of the multi-media show 1969; and Evan Hause’s arrangement of Edgard Varèse’s “Poème électronique” – use traditional acoustic instruments to realize music originally created using tape machines and electronic manipulation.

A different form of interaction between man and machine is explored in Alarm Will Sound’s renditions of music by Conlon Nancarrow, whose works for player piano are essentially impossible for any human pianist to perform. The February 7 concert at the Missouri Theatre will include Nancarrow’s “Study 2A,” arranged by Gavin Chuck, and “Study 3A,” arranged by Derek Bermel, which were recorded for the group’s 2008 album a/rhythmia.

The three other works on the program destined for Alarm Will Sound’s next CD are “Big Spinoff,” from the esteemed American composer Charles Wuorinen; “Will Sound,” from Wolfgang Rihm, one of Germany’s most prolific contemporary composers; and “Zoetrope,” written by the young British composer Charlie Piper for the 2012 Mizzou International Composers Festival.

Fifth annual Mizzou International Composers Festival set for July 21-26, 2014

The Mizzou International Composers Festival (MICF) will celebrate its fifth year in 2014, and composers Beat Furrer and Nico Muhly will be among those attending the party. Furrer and Muhly have been named guest composers for the Mizzou New Music Initiative’s signature event, which will be held Monday, July 21 through Saturday, July 26 on the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia.

The 2014 MICF once again will present a series of public concerts featuring music from contemporary composers, as well as workshops, master classes and other events. As in years past, Saturday night’s grand finale at the Missouri Theatre will present the world premieres of new works from each of the festival’s eight resident composers. The acclaimed new music group Alarm Will Sound, conducted by artistic director Alan Pierson, will serve as resident ensemble.

Beat Furrer is a Swiss native who studied music in his home country and in Vienna before co-founding one of Europe’s leading contemporary music ensembles, Klangforum Wien, which he still conducts. He has written a variety of critically acclaimed works, including operas and musical theater, and has received numerous awards and honors for his music in Europe.

Since 1991, Furrer has served as professor of composition at the Graz University of Music and Dramatic Arts, and he has been guest professor in composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt since 2006. In 2004 Furrer was awarded the Music Prize of the City of Vienna, and in 2005 became a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin.

Nico Muhly was born in Vermont and earned a master’s in composition at Juilliard studying with Christopher Rouse and John Corigliano. He also worked for Philip Glass as a MIDI programmer and editor for six years.

Muhly has composed a wide scope of work for ensembles, soloists and organizations including the American Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, Carnegie Hall, Chicago Symphony, countertenor Iestyn Davies, violinist Hilary Hahn, choreographer Benjamin Millepied, New York City Ballet, New York Philharmonic, Paris Opéra Ballet, soprano Jessica Rivera, and designer/illustrator Maira Kalman.

With the 2014 guest composers confirmed, eight resident composers now will be selected for the Festival through a portfolio application process to create a new work for Alarm Will Sound. During the Festival, they’ll get composition lessons from Furrer and Muhly and take part in rehearsals with Alarm Will Sound. Each composer also will receive a copy of a professional live recording of their work.

The application process for resident composers begins September 26, 2013, and the deadline for submitting an application is Friday, November 15, 2013. Wrapping up the 2013 Mizzou International Composers Festival

The 2013 Mizzou International Composers Festival has come to a successful conclusion, but we’ve still got a few more Festival-related links to share with you:

* The Festival’s Saturday night grand finale concert was named a “Best Bet” for the weekend by St. Louis Post-Dispatch classical music critic Sarah Bryan Miller.

* Jeanne Sinquefield, whose Sinquefield Charitable Foundation provides funding for the Festival, was interviewed by KBIA, the NPR affiliate in Columbia, MO. Dr. Sinquefield’s interview with KBIA’s Trevor Harris is available online here.

Composers Festival Spotlight: Alarm Will Sound

Continuing with our series of posts focusing on various participants in the 2013 Mizzou International Composers Festival, today we catch up with the latest from Alarm Will Sound.

As the resident ensemble for the Festival since it began in 2010, AWS plays a crucial role in bringing to life the new works created by the resident composers. Not many groups would be willing or able to take on the challenge of premiering eight new pieces in one night with limited rehearsal time, but Alarm Will Sound has accomplished the task each year of the MICF with consummate skill and flair.

Former in 2001 by former students at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, Alarm Will Sound (pictured) is a 20-member ensemble “dedicated to the creation, performance, and recording of today’s music. It is an advocate for innovative work by established and emerging composers, especially works that incorporate theatrical and multimedia elements by choreographers, visual artists, designers, and directors. It fosters the education and professional development of young musicians through residencies, master classes, readings and workshops. With the goal of cultivating a diverse and sophisticated audience, the ensemble brings intelligence and a sense of adventure to the rich variety of musical expression in the contemporary world.” You can read a detailed history of the group here.

Alarm Will Sound’s connection to the University of Missouri School of Music began with Stefan Freund, associate professor of composition and music theory at Mizzou who’s also the cellist for AWS. In addition to serving as the resident ensemble for the Mizzou International Composers Festival since its inception, AWS maintains an active schedule of touring and recording throughout the year.

Earlier this year, they presented the American premiere of Steve Reich’s Radio Rewrite in a concert at Stanford University, as well as a program of Reich’s music at the Guggenheim in New York City. Their performance at Carnegie Hall in April featured a program of works written specifically for AWS, including the world premiere of Tyondai Braxton’s Fly By Wire. (You can see a couple of videos related to the Reich premiere, and a conversation between Braxton and AWS’ Michael Clayville, in the embedded windows at the bottom of this post.)

Other recent NYC gigs have included a show for the fifth anniversary of Le Poisson Rouge, playing the music of violinist and guitarist Caleb Burhans; and a set at the annual Bang On A Can new music marathon.

AWS also spent time this past year strengthening their ties to the state of Missouri by presenting a three-concert season in St. Louis, with two performances at the Sheldon Concert Hall and a revival of their multi-media production 1969 at the Touhill Performing Arts Center.

Before the St. Louis performance, AWS took 1969 to the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, the alma mater of a number of its members. (You’ll find a video made in conjunction with that concert at Eastman, plus a soundcheck rendition of the Jimi Hendrix version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” featured in the show, below.)

And if all that weren’t enough, AWS also found time in 2013 to release Canzonas Americanas, an album of music by former MICF guest composer Derek Bermel that has received an enthusiastic reception from critics.

Plans for another St. Louis season in 2013-14 already are well underway, with concerts scheduled in October and February at The Sheldon and more to be announced. In another important “first” for the group, AWS also will serve next year as artists-in-residence for 2013-14 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York

At the MICF, in addition to premiering eight new pieces at the Festival’s grand finale on Saturday, July 27, Alarm Will Sound will perform a completely different program on Thursday, July 25 at the Missouri Theatre.

That concert will feature Living Toys by Thomas Ades and Stefan Freund’s electronica-inspired Unremixed, as well as works written specifically for Alarm Will Sound by 2013 MICF guest composers Augusta Read Thomas and Daniel Kellogg.

Behind the scenes with Alarm Will Sound

Before the start of the Mizzou New Music Summer Festival, resident ensemble Alarm Will Sound spent a week rehearsing at the Sinquefield Reserve in mid-Missouri.
